There is no more normal!

The title of this post is from the March 23 & 30, 2009 issue of Business Week — and I love the message. So much has changed that “the game” is permanently changed — and that is a GOOD thing.

“Big ideas” happen when people and organizations finally decide to do something to take advantage of tough times. When times are good we fall into the trap of active inertia — we keep doing what we’ve been doing. When times are tough we are forced to think differently or become irrelevant. And NOTHING should be more embarassing to you or your business than to become irrelevant to your customers or your team members.

In the coming years we will look back and be amazed at some of the innovations that will come out of the current crisis. Face it, the current crisis will result in some people and organizations that will be labeled as winners — it might as well be you. What can you do to take advantage of this situation?

Hi Bill, you said a mouthful. In my sphere, online marketing, things have been changing at breakneck speed for years. It’s incredible to see companies cling to “the old ways” and just refuse to rethink how they are allocating their marketing spend. As a result, some of these folks are getting their lunch handed to them by much smaller and newer competitors.

Brad, I agree. In a few years it will be fascinating to look back on the winners and losers from this tectonic shift in the business ecosystem. Too bad some of the losers won’t see it coming.

When everything that used to work gets thrown out the window, first desire of many customers is to find things that seem to bring back ‘normal.’ I’ve been trying to work through ideas with clients that help them bring a new ‘normal’ to their customers. Crazy new world is fine and dandy – but complexity gets tiring.

Fred,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Anyway, I like your comment about helping clients find the “new normal.” That said, I’m afraid that your second comment about complexity being tiring IS part of the new normal. My view is that the world will continue to get more complex and we need to find ways to deal with it. Gloablization and communication technologies are genies that will never go back in the bottle.
